Olympic Donuts

But I’m not only watching TV. I’m also eating donuts. Olympic donuts. They are shaped and decorate after the olympic rings!! Cute? And yummy!!

As you may know, my happy pixels, I always make some food to watch my favourite tv shows, like cycling or  Eurovision. This time, the ideal sweet was, obviously, this one. This  way I can replicate the olympic logo.

Ingredients (about 20 units):

Dough:

1/8 cup warm water
1 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
1/4 cup olive oil
1/4 cup heavy whipping cream/ soy cream
3 tablespoons sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 1/4 cups boiling water
2 egg yolks
4 1/4 cups flour

Glaze:

  • 200g powder sugar
  • 2-3  tablespoons water
  • gel food colorant: blue, yellow, red, green
  • dark chocolate
  • 2-3 tablespoons heavy cream/ soy cream

Directions:

First combine the 1/8 cup warm water and yeast. Give it a few stirs and allow it to sit and bubble for a while.

In a large bowl combine the oil, cream, sugar, salt, cinnamon and vanilla extract. Pour the  boiling water into the cream mixture and stir to combine. Allow that to cool to room temperature.

Stir 1/3 cup of the cream/water mixture in with the egg yolks. Then add the egg yolks to the entire mixture. Add yeast, too.

Begin adding the flour, 1/2 cup at a time, stirring in between, until you’ve added all the flour, and the dough comes together. This dough will appear quite wet and sticky.

Move the dough to a lightly oiled bowl and allow to rise in a warm, draft free place for 1 1/2 to 2 hours. At home 1 hour 15′ was enough.

Divide the dough in half and turn out on a lightly floured surface. Cut out your donuts (and holes! Don’t forget the donut holes!) and place on a few baking sheets. Cover and allow to rise for another 30 minutes.

Fill a large pot with enough oil that the donuts can float and heat the oil. You want the dough to cook all the way through within 30 seconds on each side, without burning.

Once your oil is ready, start frying those donuts! After frying remove them to a plate or baking sheet covered in paper towels to soak up any excess oil.

Once your donuts are cool enough, it’s time to make that glaze!! To make the sugar glaze, just combine water and powder sugar. Once it’s well mixed, divide it in 4 parts. Dye each one in a different colour: red, blue, green and yellow.

To make the chocolate one, melt together cream and chocolate. You can use the microwave.

Dip 5 donuts in every kind of glaze, so you’ll have a beautiful rainbow.
